This drought-tolerant near-native perennial is non-aggressive and ideal for dry gardens, especially if you’re looking to add a little diversity. The seed for these plants came from the rocky bluffs of the Appalachian mountains. As far as ecotype, while it’s not native to PA, it’s closer than farther out mid-west. Deer also don’t seem to bother it, though I rarely find my deer bothering coreopsis in general. Your deer may vary.
This also grows quite short, topping out at about 1-2ft tops, so it’s ideal for borders and small gardens. Unlike a certain particular species (every genera has one) that is known to take over, this one just adds a little pop of color along your walkways. Great for difficult sunny spots when you need some native plants that can tolerate living on the edge to shade out weeds. As you can see from the photo, the growth on this plant is quite dense.
