Description

If you thought that common milkweed was confusing enough to discern from pokeweed, meet poke milkweed. I will say, the seedlings themselves do not resemble pokeweed. It’s once these plants are full grown that the pointy leaves are very similar in appearance. This also has the ability to grow quite large. I’m not sure if grows quite to the size of pokeweed, but it’s not far off, topping out at a maximum 7ft in ideal conditions.

Also, unlike the other popular milkweeds you may already grow, this grows in the woods, in part to full shade. My seedlings are currently growing in dappled sun in the woodland nursery. As you can see in the photo, they’re thriving.

The white, sometimes tinted with pink flowers are not held in a tight clump like other milkweeds. Instead, the clusters of flowers droop from long stalks from leaf axils along the stem. This taprooted species is found in upland woods, so plant it in well-drained soil amended with rich, organic matter. That means leave the leaves on this one year-round (do that with all plants anyway, you can thin them but don’t ever clear them out entirely).
