This species is not even closely related to a rush, but rather is known as a fern-ally. Equisetum are among the oldest plant families in the world, having existed since before the time of dinosaurs.
This is a really cool plant. It is also a fairly aggressive one, which is why I prefer to enjoy mine in giant planters instead of the ground. Unless your goal is to piss off your neighbors, then by all means.
This is a species that looks very similar to bamboo, is evergreen, and can be utilized in planters as an excellent architectural statement in the garden, especially with its stiff, upright habit. It is also extremely useful to humans, the hollow stems having a rough texture to them that have been used as anything from a natural scrub to scour pans as well as a very fine grit sandpaper. I have used it to hone my garden tools between sharpening, and to gently scrub the rust off of metal surfaces.
It is perfect for naturalizing a large riparian area where you need something to hold the soil. Or plant them in the beds between your house and the driveway for a different kind of hedge. They fare far better in loose, moist soil; however, they tolerate some drought once established and can grow in clay soil, which holds them back a bit.
It may be a bit aggressive but definitely far too cool of a plant to keep to myself. These are not grown from spore, but rather divided from my own established planters which I periodically try to thin out.
