Species of Concern

These are plants that are listed as rare, threatened, endangered. This category includes globally at risk near-native plants, and PA native plants at risk specifically in PA. All plant material for propagation was legally obtained and cultivated.

The cover image for this category is an illustration for Franklinia alatamaha by William Bartram, along with an illustration of William Bartram by Howard Pyle and a map of one of this travels. The story of the Franklin tree is what inspired me to take an interest in cultivating species of concern. Had Bartram not collected and grown the Franklin trees from seed, we wouldn’t get to enjoy them today. They have been extirpated from the wild for at least well over a century if not more. As long as we continue to cultivate and care for our most vulnerable species, even if something happened to them in the wild, all would not be lost.

I do have a Franklin tree, and I have continued the tradition by growing them from seed. All the trees today are descendants from the seed Bartram collected centuries ago.
