An extremely unusual fern that was once overharvested for Christmas wreaths. Unlike the exotic invasive species (Lygodium japonicum and Lygodium microphyllum), this one is a bit slow to grow. Because I am growing these responsibly from spore, they’re taking their time. Some show promise, others peter out. I am only listing the ones that are showing good, vigorous growth.

They do not have to grow in bogs, though they are often found growing in boggy areas, fens, etc. They do prefer acidic soil, but if you are able to grow any Ericaceae, then that is sufficient. Consistently moist but well-drained soil is preferred in my experience, rich in organic matter. They are semi-evergreen, so do not bury them with leaves. Snow-cover is fine. I have mine growing happily in the dappled shade of a river birch on a slope against a pergola where it gets plenty of rainwater runoff and no supplemental watering.
They are slow to grow. 2nd year plants may only reach 1-2 feet at best. Part sun is ok too as long as they don’t dry out, but don’t drown them, either. Once I have a proper bog set-up, I’ll test that as well. If you site it well, they are a no-fuss plant. Mine are growing next to Bignonia and Mitchella repens, with Viola walteri nearby. Great for moist, well-drained woodland areas.
