This naturally occurring hybrid between Monarda didyma and Monarda fistulosa is native in southeastern PA. In fact it’s largely endemic to Pennsylvania, New York, and Ohio with scattered small populations present in a few other states and counties. When hybrids become a stable much like a species, they get their own official binomial designation. Not only can these cross pollinate with one-another to retain their hybrid qualities, there’s a very rare secondary hybrid that comes from a cross between this species and Monarda fistulosa called Monarda x medioides. Maybe you can encourage it to happen in your garden? Hybrids aren’t as easy to come by as some people might think (but it depends on the species). Otherwise we wouldn’t have stable straight non-hybrid species anymore.
