Deer may or may not choose to eat plants depending on location, even a few miles over. Some plants that are not typically browsed may end up being browsed by your deer. Deer-tolerant plants can handle it - in fact, they may respond really well to a bit of browsing. Note that I wrote "a bit" - not much can handle an entire herd of deer going after a tiny population, especially newly planted baby plants. Take precautions as necessary, then see what happens with the ones that manage to spread. Deer-deterrent plants are ones that deer seem to consistently steer clear of. Plants with strong, fragrant foliage are not known to be palatable to deer anywhere. These can sometimes be used to protect deer snacks if carefully planted in a community surrounding deer snacks, because the scent will be too overpowering.
All native plants have value in a native habitat. A keystone does not stand alone, but is supported by the rest of the arch.
I do sell some plants that are not native to PA or the local ecoregion. These plants are either species of concern in other parts of the US (and therefore not spreading even in their native range in which they evolved to thrive), or have otherwise been tested by other gardens and shown to play well with others. I do not sell plants that are known to be aggressive that are not native to this area. I also do not sell near-natives that put native species at risk (especially species of concern) through hybridization. This is why I do not and will not be carrying Echinacea laevigata (for example), because I am growing and hope to offer Echinacea laevigata in the future.
Any information shared is from personal experience or reputable/historical sources. I am not responsible for what someone chooses to put on/in their body. Please do your due diligence and research the plants yourself. Consume any new-to-you plants at your own risk. Always double & triple-check plant ID before consuming.
