This is a lovely annual species that is very lightly fragrant with flowers which look like a pink pearly everlasting or sweet everlasting (two very different species that look similar to one another).
It is an annual species that I am hoping to add to the nursery at some point, once native gardeners become more opening to purchasing annuals over perennials. Or should I say, a pseudo-annual. Allegedly, these are perennial in warmer climates (zone 8 and further south), but here in zones 6-7 it does die back at the end of the year. Since it will grow, flower and set seed in the first year, I treat it like an annual.
They are known to be an obligate wetland species, however consistently moist soil is more than sufficient to grow these. I just wouldn’t let them dry out too much. They can adapt to saline conditions, since this species naturally grows along the coast near brackish water. There is a way to adapt species to more saline conditions, but if you don’t grow them that way, then they would likely be damaged if you were to suddenly put them in salt water. Unlike some coastal species, however, they don’t require saline conditions to grow or thrive.
Germination
I’ve read that these do not require treatment, but germination may be greatly improved by exposing them to cold & moist conditioning. They do well with winter sowing, which is how I grow mine. Due to the very tiny seed, you will want to surface sow these so they’re exposed to light. I left the pappus (fluffy stuff) on the seed, which I find helps it stick to the soil better once gently misted in.
