There are so many sunflower species native to North America, it’s hard to keep track of them all. This one is native to southeastern PA, albeit extirpated from the state, so let’s bring it back! Since PA is at the northern end of the native range for this species, which is far more common in the southeast, it is well adapted for our changing climate.
They do like wet soil. Of all the sunflowers I’ve grown so far, this one is the first one to tell me I need to water. I probably also need to bump them up. They’re not small by any means, even growing in quart pots (though the quart pots do have multiple plants per pot). So take advantage of the cheaper price of the slightly pot-bound quart pot plants to add these to the garden, before I have a chance to move them up to gallons.
