American Hogpeanut

Description

These are seed-grown groundnuts! Most groundnuts sold on the market today are clonal divisions of tubers. This does not benefit genetic diversity. Each one of these is seed-grown. Add these perennial native edible tubers to your food forest for continual harvest (just be sure to leave the biggest tuber in the ground to continue producing).

If you struggle with squirrels or other wildlife digging up your harvest, pin hardware cloth over the ground. The vines, which die back each year, will grow up between the wires. If voles are a problem, a tip given to me by another gardener suggests amending your soil with chicken grit. They allegedly do not like digging through the sharp gravel. Alternatively, tou can plant them in above-ground planters, which will also make harvest easier. Use hardware cloth or chicken grit to prevent wildlife from digging up your planter.
